How to Care for Custom Apparel and Personalized Gifts So They Last
You put real thought into ordering a custom piece. Whether it was a graduation shirt, a personalized tumbler, a rhinestone set for a birthday, or a DTF graphic tee for the whole family, that kreation was made to mean something.
The last thing you want is to ruin it on the first wash.
Custom apparel and personalized gifts require a little more care than a standard off-the-rack item. The print methods and decoration techniques used to make them work differently than generic fabric dye or screen printing. When you understand how your kreation was made, taking care of it becomes simple.
This guide covers everything you need to know about protecting four of the most popular custom piece types: sublimation shirts, DTF printed items, rhinestone apparel, and personalized tumblers and drinkware. Follow these steps and your kreation will look just as polished years from now as it did the day it arrived.
Why Custom Pieces Need Special Care
Standard clothing care instructions are designed for mass-produced items printed or dyed in high-volume industrial processes. Custom pieces are different. They are made one at a time or in small batches using specialty print methods that bond to fabric or substrates in specific ways.
Sublimation printing, for example, works by converting dye into a gas that bonds directly into polyester fibers. The color literally becomes part of the fabric which is why sublimation prints are so vibrant and durable. But that bond can be weakened by excessive heat, harsh detergents, or friction that pulls at the fiber surface.
DTF (Direct to Film) printing transfers a flexible adhesive film onto fabric. When applied correctly, it is incredibly durable but the edges of the transfer can lift over time if exposed to high dryer heat or abrasive washing conditions.
Rhinestone decoration uses heat bonded stones applied to fabric with a specialized adhesive. The stones are secure and they can be pulled loose by the mechanical action of a washing machine drum or weakened by harsh chemicals.
Personalized sublimation tumblers carry their design as part of the coated surface. Dishwasher heat and detergents are aggressive enough to crack and fade that surface coating over time.
Understanding the method tells you exactly what to protect against. That is all custom care really is: knowing what your piece is made of, and treating it accordingly.
How to Wash and Care for Sublimation Shirts
Sublimation shirts are known for producing vivid, all-over prints that feel soft because the ink becomes part of the fabric not a layer sitting on top of it. That same quality that makes sublimation prints beautiful is also what requires thoughtful washing.
Wash inside out.
Turning your sublimation shirt inside out before every wash reduces friction against the printed surface and protects the color vibrancy over time. This one step alone extends the life of the print significantly.
Use cold water.
Hot water does not ruin a sublimation print immediately but repeated exposure to heat during washing accelerates fading. Cold water is gentler on the dye bond and on the polyester fibers themselves.
Gentle cycle only.
High agitation wash cycles create friction. Over time, that friction degrades the surface of the fabric and dulls the print. Select the gentle or delicate cycle and let the machine do its job without putting the shirt through unnecessary wear.
Low heat in the dryer or air dry.
Heat is the most important factor to manage with sublimation. If you use a dryer, select low heat. The best option is to hang or lay flat to air dry. The shirt will feel just as soft and the colors will stay truer longer.
Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
Bleach will strip color from any printed fabric. Fabric softener coats fibers in a way that can cloud print clarity over time. A mild, dye-free detergent is all you need.
How to Care for DTF Printed Items
DTF (Direct to Film) transfers are one of the most versatile custom printing methods available — they work on cotton, polyester, blends, dark fabrics, and light ones. The finished product is a smooth, slightly raised print with excellent color saturation and detail.
Caring for DTF items correctly keeps that print looking clean and prevents the edges from lifting.
Turn inside out before washing.
Just like sublimation, washing DTF items inside out protects the surface of the print from direct friction and mechanical abrasion during the wash cycle.
Cold water, gentle cycle.
The same logic applies: cold water and low agitation protect the adhesive bond that holds the DTF transfer to the fabric. Warm or hot water can soften that bond over repeated washes.
Low heat in the dryer.
The most common way DTF prints begin to show wear is edge lifting caused by high dryer heat. Dry on low heat or air dry. If you use a dryer, remove the item while it is still slightly damp and finish air drying flat.
Do not iron directly on the print.
If your DTF item needs pressing, turn it inside out and iron on the reverse side. Applying a hot iron directly to a DTF transfer can melt the surface and permanently damage the print.
Do not dry clean.
The solvents used in dry cleaning can break down the adhesive in DTF transfers. Standard home laundering with cold water and mild detergent is the right method.
How to Care for Rhinestone Shirts and Apparel
Rhinestone pieces have a presence that no other decoration method matches. A well executed rhinestone design catches light and turns heads whether it is a birthday shirt, a team spirit tee, or a custom event piece. The key to keeping every stone exactly where it belongs is protecting them from the two biggest threats: mechanical agitation and heat.
Hand wash when possible.
The gentlest option for rhinestone apparel is always hand washing in cool water with a mild detergent. Submerge the item, gently squeeze water through the fabric, and rinse thoroughly. Do not wring or twist lay flat to dry.
If machine washing, use a mesh laundry bag.
A mesh laundry bag dramatically reduces the mechanical force the washing machine drum exerts on your rhinestone piece. Place the item inside out in the bag, select the gentle cycle with cold water, and use a small amount of mild detergent.
Air dry always.
Dryer heat is the fastest way to loosen rhinestone adhesive. Always air dry rhinestone pieces flat or on a hanger. Never put them in the dryer.
Do not iron over rhinestones.
Heat applied directly to rhinestones can melt or discolor them. If the fabric around a rhinestone design needs pressing, work carefully around the decorated area or use a pressing cloth as a barrier on the reverse side.
Store flat or on a hanger.
Folding rhinestone pieces in a way that presses stones against each other can create pressure that loosens the adhesive over time. Store flat or hang to prevent this.
How to Care for Custom Tumblers and Personalized Drinkware
Personalized sublimation tumblers are one of the most popular custom gift items and one of the most commonly damaged by a single care mistake. The answer to keeping your tumbler looking exactly the way it did on day one is simple: never put it in the dishwasher.
Hand wash only.
Dishwashers use high heat and strong detergents that are aggressive enough to fade, crack, and peel the sublimation coating on a personalized tumbler. Hand washing with warm water and a mild dish soap is all it takes to keep the design vibrant and intact.
Use a soft sponge or cloth.
Abrasive scrubbing pads will scratch the surface of the tumbler coating. Use a soft sponge or cloth to clean the exterior, and a long-handled bottle brush for the interior.
Do not soak.
Extended soaking especially with hot water can begin to lift the coating on the exterior of the tumbler over time. Wash, rinse, and dry rather than leaving it submerged.
Dry immediately after washing.
Water sitting on the exterior coating for extended periods can cause subtle surface damage over time. Towel dry the exterior immediately after rinsing and set upside down on a drying rack to finish air drying.
Avoid microwaving.
Most sublimation tumblers are not microwave safe. The coating and any metallic elements in the design can react unpredictably to microwave heat. Check the specific tumbler specifications if you are unsure.
Why This Matters More Than You Might Think
A custom piece is not just a product. It is a physical record of a moment that mattered — a graduation, a birthday, a family reunion, a senior night, a memorial. The people in your life who received or wore that kreation carry a piece of the occasion with them every time they use it.
Taking care of it is taking care of the memory.
At LDD Kreationz, every order goes through a guided design process with proof approval before production begins because the finished kreation should look exactly the way you imagined it. And with the right care, it will keep looking that way for a long time to come.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Care
Can I put a sublimation shirt in the dryer?
Yes. on low heat. High heat accelerates color fading in sublimation prints. Low heat or air drying is always the better option for long-term vibrancy.
How do I wash a shirt with rhinestones without losing stones?
Turn the item inside out, place it in a mesh laundry bag, and wash on a gentle cold cycle. Always air dry, never use a dryer. Hand washing is even better if you want maximum protection.
Why can't I put my custom tumbler in the dishwasher?
The heat and detergents in a dishwasher break down the sublimation coating on the tumbler's exterior. Hand washing with warm water and mild soap is all you need to keep the design intact.
What detergent should I use for custom printed items?
A mild, dye-free detergent is best for all custom pieces. Avoid fabric softeners (which cloud print clarity), bleach (which strips color), and heavy-duty detergents designed for work clothing.
